The calling cards shown here are from the collection of Mary(6) Etta Stubbs Grave [Charles Rolla(5), Henry(4), Nathan(3), John(2), Thomas(1) Stubbs] who lived from February 22, 1874 to October 25, 1974. 'Aunt Mary' had a big interest in family history and genealogy and worked to collect and preserve it for the Stubbs, White, Gibson and Grave families. The calling card at the top of the page has an attached bouquet that, when lifted, reveals the name of its owner, 'Allen Grave' (Mary's husband of 47 years).
By noticing the use of maiden names and marriage dates it seems that the cards date from the 1880's and possibly into the 1890's. Although the striking use of color printing is one of the things that you may notice about the cards, they appeared in several different styles, perhaps evolving with time. Although many in Mary's collection were from young women, several are from young men, and married couples also had cards. I believe the cards may have been used as calling cards when visiting someone's home as a guest. The cards in the collection appear to come from a limited time span - so perhaps they were a passing fad.
